Every child deserves to know their rights — and to have someone stand up for them.

Legist Foundation is a non-profit working for the welfare of society, with a special focus on child rights, legal awareness and justice for women and deprived communities across India.

Who we are

Legist Foundation grew out of the legal aid and pro bono work of The Legist, a New Delhi law firm that has stood for the rights of women, children and the deprived since its inception.

Our volunteers — lawyers, students and community members — run legal awareness programmes in different parts of the country, help families reach the right authorities, and campaign against discrimination in all its forms.

We believe that knowing the law is the first protection a person has. So we take the law out of courtrooms and into schools, settlements and villages, in language people actually use.

We fight discrimination in all forms and manners, and we are committed to protecting the rights of women, children and the deprived sections of society.

What we do

Four areas of work, all rooted in one idea: rights only matter when people can use them.

Child rights and protection

Awareness on child labour, child marriage, abuse and the right to education. We guide families and schools on using POCSO, the Juvenile Justice Act and Childline services.

Legal awareness programmes

Workshops in schools, colleges and communities that explain everyday rights — from filing an FIR to accessing free legal aid — in simple language.

Legal aid and pro bono support

Volunteer advocates help women, children and economically weaker families understand their options and connect with legal services authorities.

Social welfare and equality

Campaigns against discrimination, support for women's rights, and community drives that bring health, education and welfare schemes within reach.

Rights every child in India has

These are guaranteed by the Constitution and Indian law. We help children, parents and teachers know them.

To learnFree and compulsory education from 6 to 14 years under the Right to Education Act.
To be safeProtection from sexual abuse and exploitation under the POCSO Act, 2012.
To be a childNo child below 14 may be employed, and adolescents may not work in hazardous jobs.
To grow up firstMarriage of girls under 18 and boys under 21 is prohibited by law.

If a child is in danger or needs help right now, call the national child helpline. It is free and works 24 hours a day.
